Brad Montell, the son of noted Kentucky author Lynwood Montell and a lifelong educator Ruth Evelyn, was first elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 2002, where he continues to serve the 58th District of Shelby and Spencer counties. While serving four consecutive terms and championing such causes as “No Pass, No Drive” and “Long-term Care Partnership,” Representative Montell has consistently worked to limit government intrusion, to reduce spending and taxes, and to maintain pro-family, pro-life values. He serves on four House committees: Banking and Insurance; State Government; BR Sub. on General Government, Finance and Public Protection; and Ag and Small Business, where in 2004 he guided through legislation designating Shelby County as the Saddlebred Capital of the World.
Over the past 20 years, Brad has served in numerous leadership positions in Shelby County, including on the Board of Directors of Republic Bank, Shelbyville; a term as Chamber of Commerce President; two terms as Chairman of the Shelby Economic Development Council; Director of Loving Choice Pregnancy Center; Director of the Kiwanis Club; and Vice-President of his Leadership Shelby Class. He attends the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville, where he and his wife Marla teach a young married couples class. Representative Montell is also a member of the National Federation of Independent Business, National Wild Turkey Federation and the Shelby Co. Cattleman’s Association.
Born on December 5, 1956 in Fayette County, Brad’s family soon moved to Campbellsville where he attended grade school. His family moved again to Bowling Green in 1968, where he attended high school and later attended Western Kentucky University, earning both a bachelor and a master’s degree. After teaching high school for nine years, Brad was hired by a brokerage firm and eventually moved to Shelbyville where he is the owner of a small investment company on Main Street.
Representative Montell has been married to Marla James of Glasgow for 29 years. Marla, who earned a degree in health care administration, has held various positions within that field. They have two sons, Tyler and Hunter. |
